Day 203 Lucky Bay, WA

(We are now back in a mobile coverage area so I will update you on the past couple of days we spent at Lucky Bay.)

Esperance was a lovely surprise for us with many scenic attractions.  We had covered most of them before we left today for Lucky Bay and the last thing we did yesterday afternoon was the trail at the Lions Lookout at Esperance.  We were going to walk the trail when we drove the Great Ocean Drive but the weather, as you may recall, was horrible.

The lookout is a short drive from the Esperance town precinct and there are a couple of walks around the lookout point.  We decided to do the short one that was around 2kms.  Unfortunately for us the markers for the trail were arrows that had been hammered into the granite rock and a lot of them had been removed by vandals.  I just don't get why anyone would want to steal something like this but it seems the way of the world.  So our short walk took us twice as long as we followed a trail that was way off the mark.  However, even though we walked a longer distance the views from the trail were spectacular.  It was hard going in parts as the trail gave way to solid rock that you had to negotiate but nothing too difficult.  A few photos.....

Lucky Bay is our destination today.  This is a paid camping area inside the Cape Le Grand National Park.  There is no power or water hook-up but it has to be one of the best camping areas we have ever stayed at.  There is a brand new amenities block with hot water and also a new camp kitchen for the true backpacker campers. The sites are all white gravel and very spacious.  There is a very decent space between the staggered sites so there is also a lot of privacy.  The native gardens around the camping area are beautifully tended and of course the wildflowers in the background are a kaleidoscope of colour.  It is truly beautiful.  Lucky Bay itself is one of the most beautiful beaches we have ever laid our eyes on.  The only thing we have seen as good was in the Caribbean and the only difference between the two is that the Carribbean had palm trees and Lucky Bay has the sand dunes.

The only thing to mar this lovely camping area is the weather.  It has once again turned crappy with lots of rain and wind that nearly blows us off our feet when we take a walk along the beach.  We are hoping that day two will be an improvement.
