Day 188 Peaceful Bay, WA

Peaceful Bay.  I almost sigh as I say this lovely name and such a fitting name for this very sleepy little town.  There is nothing here except a caravan park with a shop attached to it and a few residential houses. The shop has a good selection of grocery items that would help you out if you were in a pickle, but it's the Fish and Chip's that have gained a very solid reputation.  The fish is all fresh and locally caught and the last time we had fresh fish was in Port Gregory way back in July.  It was a real treat so I'm hoping that Peaceful Bay lives up to its reputation and can match it or even better it.  I will let you know.

We left Porongurup around 9.30 and it was with a certain amount of sadness.  This is an amazing place to explore and the walks that we did were spectacular.  The weather wasn't the greatest but we have to go with the flow on that one.  We were there for six nights and I think we covered most of the highlights.  Philip woke feeling refreshed after his mammoth hike yesterday so he's feeling pretty chuffed.

The drive to Peaceful Bay is 130km and we have to head back to Mount Barker before turning the vehicle south toward Denmark and Peaceful Bay.  We are excited to be in this area as our friends Michael and Jane have given us a wealth of local knowledge of places we should visit.  We are praying for a couple of rain free days to explore the area but looking at the BOM long range forecast it doesn't look promising, but you never know your luck.   I really want to sample the local Marron while we are here and the Marron Tale Cafe and Marron farm are not far from where we are staying.  And off course you cannot come to this area without doing the tree top walk in the Valley of the Giants.

We stopped at the Visitor Centre at Denmark on our way to Peaceful Bay but unfortunately it was closed.  So not to be deterred we decided to ditch the car and set off on foot back into the Denmark township for a bit of a look around.  We contemplated coffee but it was close to lunch so we decided to just keep walking.  It is a lovely town and exactly as you would expect in this beautiful area of Western Australia.  There are wineries, many wineries, in the area and Jane has told us that we cannot miss out on Harewood Estate Winery.  We will also sample, and stock up on some cheeses at the Cheese Factory that is on land that Jane and her ex husband used to own. So much to see and do!!

It is just over 30km from Denmark to Peaceful Bay township and after a quick check in we are now fully set up for our five nights here.  The caravan park is lovely and it is not a structured park.  There are no cement slabs just beautiful grassed areas.  You choose your own site and we chose one a little away from everybody else although there are not many vans here.  School in Western Australia recommences tomorrow so all the families have packed up and gone home.

Peaceful Bay is just a short walk from the caravan park so if it stops raining we will head there later today.  From the photographs that I have seen it is a beautiful bay and undoubtably a hotspot in summer.  No swimming for us though.  The cold night time temperatures we have been experiencing would be keeping the water at freezing temperature.....
