The past three days at sea were gratefully accepted by Philip and I as we have had time to recover from a bout of the flu. Both of us spent one whole day in bed, separate days thank goodness, and although not fully recovered, we were recovered enough to do a walking tour of Isafjordur today.
Isafjodur is nestled in a magnificent fjord, carved out millions of years ago by glaciers. It was first settled in the 1600's but it was the mid 1900's where it became a pivotall centre for the thriving fishing industry.
We met our tour guide dockside and quickly set out on our town tour. She set a cracking pace but stopped at interesting landmarks that gave time for the stragglers to catch up. She is from Ukraine and arrived here in 2023 and said that there are many Ukrainians have moved to Iceland since the war began. Our first stop was at a small cottage and the guide told us that the numbers on the wall of the houses are not a street number but in fact, the year that the house was built.
There are many cottage gardens beside the homes and this one looked very healthy. Some houses and sheds are adorned with murals depicting the fishing history of Isafjordur
