Eastport, Maine was not on the original itinerary for this cruise and it replaced Bar Harbour that has virtually closed its door to cruise ships. The city had become "over loved" and was having an impact on the environment that needed to be controlled. We had visited Bar Harbour on a previous cruise so we were not too worried about the change in itinerary.
Eastport is the easternmost city in the United States and is very close to the Canadian border. It was first settled in 1772 and its economic heart beat to the rhythm of the sardine industry. More than a dozen canneries lined its shores, employing hundreds and it was a wealthy town as evidenced by the well preserved 19th century brick architecture of its historic downtown. Sadly the canning industry has faded but tourism is now taking a lead in the towns future.
Our tour was "A walking tour of historic Eastport" and our tour guides were two sisters with an obvious love of their city. We didn't walk far and the tour only took an hour but we came away with a great deal of information and lots of photos.
Today's temperature in Eastport ranged from 14 - 17 degrees. This is their summer. I don't think I would want to be here in winter.
