Berri, South Australia

Today we leave Berri and South Australia (at least for the next few weeks) and head to Mildura in Victoria.  We have loved our time in the Riverlands and Berri is a particularly beautiful place for us to have stayed.  The caravan park we chose was sheer luck with everywhere else fully booked, but it was also one of the best we have stayed in.  It is certainly the largest site we have had the good fortune to be on and the grass underfoot is a blessing and so lovely to step out onto.

The drive to Berri from Murray Bridge was also another highlight.  We chose to follow the Murray River rather than going straight along the highway and passed through Big Bend and Swan Reach where we stopped to take photos from the lookouts.  The photos speak for themselves.

I was standing quite close to the cliff edge when I was taking photographs and Philip suggests I move back.  I ask why, and he points to the crack in the cliff face just where I am standing. It is ready to let go!
We have been taking long walks along the riverfront in Berri that, although seriously damaged during the 2022 flood, has been landscaped back to perfection.  We drove to Lock 4 one afternoon, only to find that we were on the wrong side, and it took us two days to realise that there was a scenic lookout tower sitting high above the township of Berri.  Another 100 steps (boy have I huffed and puffed up some steps!) and the views were underwhelming but that had more to do with the shitty weather.  The tower though was quite spectacular.

Mildura will bring back fond memories of our time with Lynn and Graham on the houseboat.  I am also looking forward to dinner at Stefano's.  You may remember the ABC TV series Gondola on the Murray that chef Stefano De Pierre made famous.  Fingers crossed for some fine weather.
