Day 97 Carnarvon, WA

We woke to a cloudy bleak day but we are not complaining at all as we have had little to no rain for the whole four months that we have been travelling. It would actually make a nice change and the heavier the rain the better to wash some of the dust off the top of the van.  I don't think there is much hope of that though as the BOM is only predicting a few millimetres of rainfall for today and then it all clears.

However, when I looked out the window first thing this morning this is the scene that greeted me.

The sun pushed its way through the clouds for a brief moment and gave me this glorious colour.  Picture perfect.

It was a heck of a lot warmer last night than we have had over the past week so that is always a good indication of rain on the way and when we finally poked our head out the door we found that half the caravans that surrounded us last night had departed and by the time we did a yoga practice and had breakfast there was not another caravan to be seen.  Admittedly by this time it was almost 10 am.  The rain stayed away until after we had packed down the caravan but once we were on the road to Carnarvon it had set-in to a light drizzle almost all the way.

The highway was quite busy today with lots of vehicles heading in both directions.  The reason I say both directions is because there are so many vehicles that pass us!  Philip drives around the 90-95 kmh mark that it is both fuel efficient and safe.  The roads are, on average, very good throughout Western Australia and the speed limit in most areas is 110kmh. We drive too slow for most people 😂.

So now that we are comfortably entrenched at the Wintersun Caravan Park at Carnarvon, what will we spend our four days seeing and doing?

  • Carnarvon Space and Technology Museum that focuses on two parts.  The Carnarvon Tracking Station and the OTC Satellite Earth Station
  • One Mile Jetty Centre where there is an interpretive centre featuring HMAS Sydney/HSK Cormorant
  • Carnarvon Fruit Loop Circuit where we will hopefully grab some fresh produce and seafood
  • Quobba Blowholes around 40 minutes from Carnarvon and where we will also get to snorkel at the Aquarium that is a safe bay where the coral is abundant and close to shore.  This will be a full day so a picnic lunch is on the cards.
Our agenda is full and this is why we made the decision early in the trip to stay in once place for a few days.  There is so much to see and do and it is much easier to unhook the van, park up and travel around in the car.  Plus we also have the advantage of going off-road if there is something worth seeing. It's working fine so far......
