Day 106 Kalbarri, WA

After our epic day yesterday a quiet day was the way to go today.  We always try to have a quiet day after a busy day but it doesn't always go to plan😩.  It was Philip's choice of activity and he decided to hire a tinny and head up the Murchison River.  It was an excellent choice.

We were down at the boat hire shop by 10am and it didn't take long to have our induction on the correct procedures for operating the boat.  All that involved was reading a sheet of paper and agreeing.  We were lead down to the river and Philip was shown how to start the boat.  I guess if you were a complete novice you may have a problem with this but these little boats are a breeze to operate.  We were given explicit instructions though about keeping close to the left of the marker buoys.

Once we were out in the middle of the river it was a matter of following the markers buoys.  We understood why the owner was adamant about his instructions because there are some pretty mean sandbars either side of the buoys.  We passed the marina where the lobster boats were docked.

Kalbarri is renown for its rock lobsters and we are going on a Rock Lobster Pull Tour tomorrow where we get to keep the lobsters we pull out of the water. Hopefully there will be plenty.   We continued our northern journey along the Murchison and followed one of the tour boats for a short distance.  It was a  "Wilderness Safari" tour and we did wonder where the wilderness part came into play.  I did look into this boat tour that promised that in the 2.5 hour tour they would spot Emus, Kangaroos, Goats, Osprey, Heron and much more.  Funny thing is they turned around at the same spot that we did and not once did we spot any of the above 😂.  However the boat was packed so someone is making a killing out of this tour......

Our turn around point was Castle Rock.  We did think that we might stretch our legs here and walk to the top but once we got to Castle Rock we straight away changed our mind.  It was a very long climb up a very steep hill to get to the top.  No thank you.

Our alternative was to go back to a mooring place opposite where our journey began.  It is a good place to anchor and walk across the sand dunes to the ocean on the other side.  It ended up being a longer walk than we anticipated, just over three kilometres, but very enjoyable.  The waves on the other side of the sand dunes are a sight to behold.  They are enormous "dumpers" that crash up against the rocks on the oceans edge.  We watched as two jet skis negotiated the channel to reach the open ocean and they were having a ball riding the giant waves.  Not for me.

Our two hour hire time passed very quickly and by this time it was midday so it was perfect timing really. Maybe our day wasn't quite as quiet as it should have been but it was a whole lot of fun.
