Day 108 Port Gregory, WA

Right on time the BOM's prediction for rain started around 6am this morning.  They predict that it will only be wet today and tomorrow should be a fine day.  I hope so.  It's not that I don't like the rain, because I do, I really do, but it does interfere with your sightseeing when you are travelling.  For instance today we only had 65k to drive to Port Gregory but there are lots of lookouts between Kalbarri and Port Gregory that also have some pretty nice trails leading from them.  We intended to leave Kalbarri around 9.30 and slowly move our way south to Port Gregory, stopping at two or three of the lookouts.  That didn't happen.  By the time we left Kalbarri the rain had really set in and by the time we had reached the first of the lookouts we had made the decision to drive back along this road tomorrow when the weather clears.

So what are we going to see in Port Gregory (Gregory) for the next two nights.  Here is a description from WA Aussie towns website:

Port Gregory (now known as Gregory) is a tiny settlement where convict history, fishing, wheat lands and ‘getting away from it all’ holidaying all mingle. It is an unusual setting. Wheat fields grow next to huge white sand dunes, an historic convict settlement stands on the shores of a pink lake, and a reef runs parallel to the coast forming a natural breakwater for a small harbour. This tiny village is a sleepy fishing port which is made very special by beautiful white sand dunes which are 10–15 metres high, a remarkable pink lake and some of the most interesting, and well preserved, convict ruins anywhere in Western Australia.

It sounds like a pretty idyllic place to live if you like the quiet life.  There is nothing here in the way of services except a small general store that I understand stocks most things.  But we didn't come here to shop.  No, we came for the Pink Lake.  Our first glimpse of Lake Hutt was awesome.  Even through the rain the pink of Lake Hutt can be seen and I am excited that we are going to do a buggy tour of the lake tomorrow.

As I sit here writing this blog the rain has cleared a little but the wind has really picked up.  We thought if the sky cleared enough we might wander down to the shore for sunset.  Forever hopeful.  For lunch today we cooked two of our lobsters.  We ended up boiling them as it was too wet to pull the bbq out.  After they were cooked we de-shelled them and then tossed them through some garlic butter.  I have to make the big call that it was the best lobster that I have ever eaten.  There is nothing like fresh from the ocean.
