Point Turton, Yorke Peninsular, South Australia

When we originally talked about making our way over to Yorke Peninsular we thought we would be here for 2 or 3 days.  We are now at day 8.  It is such a lovely area and it will be hard to leave it tomorrow.  We have covered almost every area of the Peninsular.  Much more than plenty would bother doing, but we do enjoy exploring. There is a walk that goes all the way around the whole peninsular and it is called "Walk the Yorke".  It is hundreds of kilometres long but we managed to walk around 30 km of it over the past week.

Today we drove the north west side of Yorke Peninsular that was the only area we had not explored.  From Port Turton to Minlaton then Port Victoria, Maitland, Moonta, Port Hughes, Wallaroo (our lunch stop), Kadina, Kulpara and then heading pack to Port Turton via the central part of Yorke Peninsular.  Philip said that he drove around 250 km.

Honestly it is hard to say what place we enjoyed the most.  The seaside "villages" are preferable to the inland "bigger" towns but by big, we are still only talking a population of a few hundred.  Wallaroo though is a very large town and it is a major grain shipping port.  We watched as one of the ships was being loaded from the conveyor belt that ran adjacent to the long jetty.

Lunch was Tapas (Bao Buns filled with crispy chicken, Hoisin Pork Bites and Fries) at the Bond Store in Wallaroo.  Not only is it a restaurant but also a distillery and microbrewery.  Philip sampled the beers and he said that they were not too bad but he will stick to his Great Northern Super Crisp!

The weather is much improved from two days ago when we had gale force winds rock our van all night long at Marion Bay.  It was scary and reminded us of when we were in Ceduna last year!  Out of the three caravan parks that we stayed at on Yorke Peninsular we preferred Port Vincent.  We have never been so close to the waters edge and Port Vincent township had a very nice feel.  Point Turton comes in second but does not have much in the way of facilities in the township and Marion Bay, well the least said the best said.  Marion Bay remains a puzzle to us.  The place does not seem to have a heart.  There is a lovely Tavern where we enjoyed beer and pizza, and a general store, and that is it.

Port Vincent - could have thrown a fishing line out of our caravan window!

So tomorrow we shift camp to the Barossa.  Maggie Beer country!  We will have five nights there and we have a few things on the list to see and do.
