On our way to Horsham today we stopped at Stawell for a bit of a wander around. Most of you would know the town that grew to fame with the running of the Stawell Gift, the oldest and richest short distance running race in Australia. The first race was held in 1878 and has run in all but five years. It is an 120 metre race run on grass with a slight incline. I obtained all this information at the Stawell Gift Hall of Fame that was our first stop in our walking tour of Stawell.
Stawell is a lovely green town with colourful garden beds lining the streets and many beautiful heritage buildings dating back to the late 1800's.
The locals are friendly as we found out when Philip stopped at the barber for a haircut. The barber was very chatty and after Philip's haircut, he pointed us in the right direction to get the "best coffee" and also the "Best Custard Slice in Australia". They were big calls and he was right about the coffee, as for the custard slice, well it was good but I prefer passionfruit in my icing :-)I stopped many times to take photos of some of the lovely buildings lining the Main Street and as we walked past the town hall, the clock chimed 10 and I should have got a video of it as the miners under the clock face move up and down digging away in time with the chimes. I have never seen anything like it and it is very unique. As we were walking back to the car we came across some murals painted on the side of a couple of buildings. They were pretty darn good.....
It is just under 70km from Stawell to Horsham where we are staying for three nights. There is lots to see here that will mostly involve driving. We did cross one off the list though as we passed through the little town of Dadswell Bridge and came across "The Big Koala". Hopefully we will see a few of these cuddly critters of the next couple of days...
