Echuca, Victoria, Day 1

As we left the van park in Hay we turned our vehicle south and travelled along the Cobb Highway or The Long Paddock as it is known by the drovers who use it to transit with sheep and cattle, and it wasn't long before we came across a droving camp taking a mob of cattle to greener pastures.  In fact we passed three droving camps on this section of road.  Nowadays, with the cost of transport very high, it is cost effective to move your cattle to market or pasture using drovers.

Along the highway are various sculptures pertaining to droving.  This one is called "Smoko"

Our only stop today is at the Deniliquin Bakery where they have apparently won many awards for their meat pies. (I would like a dollar for each time I have read this about various pie shops!).  We ordered coffee and pie and the pies were pretty darn good but I do prefer a chunky meat pie rather than mince, but that is a personal preference.  The coffee was exceptional...
It is an easy drive into Echuca and we find our caravan park very easily.  It is quite a lovely park but we are a bit squishy and it is hard to reverse on to our site.  Most of the sites are drive through but as the park is "chockas" we have to take what we can get.  It takes no time at all to set up the van and as we have already had our meat pie lunch, we elect to take a walk into the town centre.  It is a lovely surprise that we are in close walking distance to the Port of Echuca that feels like a walk back in history.  There are so many beautifully restored buildings and even away from the river, the town centre has retained it olde world feel.  It is a lovely place to be.

The weather is still not being kind to us with a high of just 17 degrees today and an overnight minimum of 5.  The forecast is for showers tomorrow so we are not hopeful of any warmer weather in the foreseeable future.
