We have now shifted camp from the beautiful Barossa to Adelaide. What a great time we have had and we have left with some lovely memories. Who would have thought we would have had the opportunity of another balloon ride in the space of two months! It was disappointing that the winds were too strong for us to balloon over the Barossa Vineyards, but the Murray River was still pretty spectacular. And to make it extra special we mated up with another couple from the Riverland area (Loxton) who were able to give us a whole lot of information about that area. We are heading that way in a couple of weeks time when South Australia school holidays commence.
Our favourite towns were Angaston and Tanunda with their extraordinarily beautiful heritage buildings and the beautiful tree lined streets and avenues. We loved walking up and down those streets and even Nuriootpa, the hub of the Barossa, has a share of heritage buildings including the magnificent two storied home with its landscaped entry. And what about the lolly shop in Tanunda where Philip was able to pick up a bag of "raspberries" but no luck for me in purchasing "milkos" as they are now out of production. Actually it surprises me that a lot of lollies are still in production.....Our favourite winery has to be Château Tanunda. From the moment you drive along the cobblestone driveway you know that you are heading somewhere special. I have never seen such beautifully maintained garden areas and even the croquet lawn is something to be seen. Inside the beautiful old building are dozens of casks of wine and aged port and we do purchase a bottle of Château Tanunda Port that is as smooth as silk. The gentleman that serves us told us that the grape vines that are on the estate are now the oldest in the world, a record previously held in Europe until disease killed most of the vines.
The Château is privately owned by the Geber family that is a rarity in this area, in fact anywhere in Australia. The owner was having his photograph taken at the front of the Chateau while I was taking photos of the building, but he turned and smiled for my camera. How wonderful is that and what a grand gentleman he is with his neatly trimmed grey moustache. Note the Rolls Royce in the background....We have driven to many lookouts but our favourite was Mengler's Hill Lookout. The views in every direction were spectacular and we could see all the way to Adelaide. So what have we planned for Adelaide? Well the Adelaide Showgrounds Farmers Markets will be on our list and here we will check out Poh's "Jamface" stall. Morialta Conservation Park and waterfalls are also on the list and a place where we should be able to spot Koalas in the wild. Glenelg Beach that we hope to get to by bus and tram (that will be interesting...) and lastly Hahndorf where I hope to pick a punnet of strawberries. The cold weather has departed and we are welcoming warmer days and as there are pathways running in both directions right behind our caravan park, Philip is keen to get in some cycling and I will be pleased to once again go for a walk before breakfast.
