I love Adelaide and if I had to chose another place to live, this would be it. There are so many green spaces to enjoy walking, hiking and cycling. Right behind our caravan park (which I might add is exceptional) there is around 30km of pathway that does not cross a single road. Philip is in seventh heaven with his cycling.
Hiking we covered, with a drive to Morialta Conservation Park where we were guaranteed to spot a koala in the wild. We were not disappointed. Our hike took us to First Falls and Giant Cave but a wrong turn (there are dozens of paths) took us up a very very steep rocky path (class 4) that I knew was the wrong one, but we had to keep going as the downward journey was not an option. We eventually found our way back to where we started and this time we found the right path. It was a lovely walk into the falls but the 90 odd steps to Giants Cave was a bit huffy puffy!
Yesterday we made our way into the Adelaide Showgrounds for the weekly Farmers Markets only to find that it hadn't re-opened after the recent Adelaide Show. There was a pop-up market at a nearby school so we drove the short distance to where it was being held, but it was disappointing that Poh was not there.....We were home well and truly before lunch so we had plenty of time to give the van a hand wash with bucket and water. Philip does the top half and I do the bottom plus the windows. We work in harmony and the van now looks like somebody loves her again.
Today we decided to tackle the Adelaide Metro with a trip into the city and then out to the seaside suburb of Glenelg for a feed of Fish n Chips. I must say that the Adelaide Metro is very good. It is a fifteen minute walk for us to reach the Kelmzig O-Bahn Interchange and this is where we board one of the super fast buses (that run on both rail and road) into the city centre.
Once we alight the bus we find the tourist information centre where we are able to pick up a map of the route for the free city loop bus. We have a few blocks to walk to reach the start of the loop but it is a pleasant walk through the city streets full of wonderful architecture and some pretty cool statues. We first saw statues of the "Paparazzi Dog" in Onslow (WA) last year and we found another when in Rundle Mall. I also love the pig. We also spotted The Beatles standing on a balcony of one of the buildings and can only presume this is the same spot that they stood back in the 60's when they came to Adelaide. After we had completed the loop around the city area, and fell even more in love with Adelaide, we left the bus behind and made our way to the nearest tram stop for our journey to Glenelg. We were a bit disappointed with Glenelg but perhaps it was just the overcast day that made it look gloomy. After a compulsory walk along the Glenelg jetty we found a fish n chips shop that sold King George Whiting. It is very hard to find. The fish was delicious but the fish n chip shop did not impress Philip. However, it was clean and that is the main thing.
So, it has been a long day today with lots of walking and tomorrow we drive up and into the Adelaide Hills to the German village of Hahndorf where I am hoping to pick a punnet of strawberries from the Beerenberg farm. I think lunch will have to include German Sausages......
