The state of Alberta in Canada must be one of the most beautiful places on this earth. It just keeps giving us postcard perfect photos and memories. Today we drove from Lake Louise to Jasper, stopping at the Athabasca Glacier that forms part of the Columbia ice fields. It is the most accessible of any glaciers therefore it is visited by many people each and every day. It is a receding glacier that is expected to have completely dissolved by 2040. To get to the ice fields we board a giant Ice Explorer that takes us right on to the ice and quite close to the two story high glacier. It is an awesome experience, albeit very cold standing on the ice. There are guided treks that you can join that walk you closer to the glacier but we are very happy to stay where we are.
Back on board our APT coach we continue our drive through glacier valley. There are so many of these natural wonders sitting high up on the mountains. We stop quite a few times for photos and I am so pleased that we have joined an APT tour that gives us this time. Of course we can't stop everywhere but we certainly get to see the best. The next stop affords us some incredible reflections and it is very hard to see where the mountains begin and end in some of these photos.
Our next stop is at Maligne Canyon where we get to see the fiercely flowing water tumble into the canyon below us. Words cannot describe the power of this waterfall and photos don't do it justice. The spray coming off the fall is enough to wet you......Our last stop today is at another lake that sits high in the mountains. It is so incredibly blue, as are most of the lakes in Alberta. They are jaw dropping beautiful. Tomorrow we are white water rafting (or rather drifting) along the Athabasca River. It should be another memorable experience.
