Today we completed the circle from Darwin to Pine Creek that has taken us to some of the most beautiful and ancient places on this planet. From Litchfield National Park with it lush rainforest areas and waterfalls that are just eye boggling, to Kakadu with it's soaring sandstone escarpments and vast green wetlands, these are places that are both erringly beautiful in different ways. I'm so pleased that we took our time to visit these national parks that initially we thought we would zip through.
It was just under 300km from Jabiru to Katherine via Pine Creek. We woke up to the sound of rain on our caravan roof this morning. A sound we haven't heard since we left Palm Cove, gosh, almost six weeks ago! The rain continued to drizzle all the way to Pine Creek before the clouds disappeared before Katherine.
We made contact with our friend Pam who arranged to come to us this evening for a drink and a chat. Life is very busy for them and we didn't get to catch up with husband Raymond who is at a camp draft with the rest of the family. Their eldest son (and one of Marco's besties) is currently in hospital with a broken leg after a fall from a body truck on Thursday when he was trying to roll some hay bales from the top crate. So life is busy for Pam and we were grateful that she made the time and effort to come and say hello. Boy, what a talk fest! We sat and talked for four solid hours as there was just so much to catch up on. AND, Pam arrived with a bagful of steak straight from the paddock. Boy how I miss our own meat......
When the whole family made the move from Julia Creek to Kalala Station in the Territory we thought they were crazy and I'm sure it was a challenge for them initially to run a property that was over a million acres. But the family have not a lazy bone in their bodies and they have made a helluva good job of living and adapting to the Norther Territory. Well done guys. You are champs in my eyes.
We are having two nights in Katherine so we can stock up on supplies and to find a polling both so we can cast our vote. I will also wash all the bedding so we can start fresh as we make our way into Western Australia. Pam has given us some good insider knowledge of where to stay and what to do when we get to Kununnura. I will have to start booking ahead now as the tourist season is really picking up. We are staying in the same van park as we stayed at on our way to Darwin and it was almost empty then. Now it is almost full.
