As there is so much to report I'm going to spread it out over a few posts. The first thing I want to tell you about is Archers Point and Noah Beach.
After the Cardiac Challenge, Philip was in need of a bit of R & R so we planned our return trip home to be slow and leisurely. After we left Cooktown we made the very short trip to Archers Point where we had visited once before and really fell in love with the rugged windy coastline. We arrived around midday and went straight to the designated, sheltered camping area but it was completely full. This was school holidays and we knew it would be busy but we thought we would try our luck anyway. The next thing for us to do was to find a spot that would be relatively sheltered from the winds. Of course all the best were taken and we ended up in a less than desirable spot for wind but unbelievably picturesque. We quickly unpacked the camper, had a simple lunch and then took a walk around the coastline towards the designated camping area. The wind was really picking up by this stage but we weren't particularly worried as we know our camper will withstand considerable force. But by sundown we knew that these winds were stronger than we had ever experienced. After dinner and a couple of games of Backgammon we nestled down in our bed and tried to sleep. The wind was relentless and rocked us from side to side. The noise of the wind was also very disquieting. We must have eventually dozed off but both of us woke the next day feeling that we hadn't slept at all. We quickly packed the camper down and were very happy to leave. We found out after we arrived home that there was cyclone a long way out in the Coral Sea that was not coming anywhere near us, but it was the cause of the gale force winds!
Yes, I know. Not a very sheltered campsite! |
Even the designated camping area was windswept! |
Arriving at Noah Beach we were first surprised at how shady it is considering it is right on the beach. Not so good for us with our solar power! It didn't take us long to unpack and head straight to the beach. What a gorgeous view awaited us. Kilometres of white sand meeting a sparkling blue ocean that is so blue that it is hard to distinguish where the ocean ends and the sky begins. This is the place where the rainforest meets the ocean.
We loved our couple of days here and it is on the list for a repeat visit. The only problem we had was the solar power but since staying here we now know the best campsite for solar. Our return will definitely be sooner rather than later!
Most of the campers take there chairs and eskies to the beach for sundowners or fishing. We certainly did! |
Magnificent Noah Beach |
